Overview

For my visual design II class, we were tasked to design a poster for an event of our choosing, whether that is a concert, event nights,  advertisement, etc. While designing this poster I also had to utilize 3 design principles, grid, contrast, and a one-color relationship. I chose to design a poster advertising my favorite hand cream, a Japanese brand named Wonder Honey in the scent apple honey. Because the design of the brand is on the cuter side, I opted for a pixel approach, giving it that cartoon look.

Process

Mockup

Before making the final product, I started out with a mockup, the one below is the first draft of the final work. This mockup was made in Figma, and I tried capturing the focuses of the hand cream into this mockup. Since this was an apple honey scented hand cream, I decided on making the poster red and putting apples on the poster to make that point. The drip at the top is to emphasize that this was a hand cream, but also to fill the space at the top as it looked a little empty to me.

Pixel Works

With my hand cream in hand, I started to draw each element one at a time using Procreate. The elements were drawn on either a 32x32 square or a 16x16 square, depending on how complex it was. Because the frames I worked on were so small, and they were all pixel drawings, I needed to resize them to be bigger for better quality. After each of them were resized, I started putting the pieces together to create the actual hand cream bottle. The color scheme I chose to do was an analogous color scheme, so you can see below how I had to recolor some of the elements to better fit the analogous color scheme I had chosen to do.

Logomarks

After completing the pixel elements for the hand cream bottle, I had to find a way to put the words found on the hand cream bottle back onto my design. I had to source for the brand logo, the Apple Honey, and the Vecua Honey online. After finding what I needed, I put them through a background remover, retouched the color, and rearranged them, if necessary.

Putting Everything Together

With all my pieces ready, I used Figma to piece together the lotion bottle before moving to InDesign for the rest of the poster. While putting the pieces together, I did color variations of the hand cream bottle trying to accomplish the analogous color scheme, making sure it fit in. Below is a progress of the hand cream bottle being put together.

Initially, I had opted for a complimentary color scheme, and I thought the original was a little too white, so I had it recolored blue thinking it might fit better, but It didn't, so I went back to the original color. However, while working on the actual poster, the color looked too cool and out of place compared to the rest of the elements. So, I made the decision to change to a warmer color scheme and chose to do analogous colors to fit the brand and elements better, bringing us to our final design.

InDesign

With my hand cream pieced together, I moved onto InDesign to start on the actual poster. Following my mockup, I added the apples on there, and instead of a white milk drip at the top, I changed it into a honey drip since the scent is apple honey. The background has also been changed to a light yellow instead of the pink/red to give it a softer look. Below is the first draft made in InDesign, and this featured the original complimentary relationship I was going to do with the green leaf on the apple, and the white colorway of the bottle. After changing the color relationship from complimentary to analogous, I discarded this design and re-did everything after sorting out the colors.

Final Design

For the final design, I included a honeycomb background to emphasize the honey part, and listed the important ingredients of the hand cream on the falling apples. The apples were rearranged and the size and rotation of some of them were changed to appear more natural. Out of the three design principles (grid, contrast, and one-color relationship), I think I managed to accomplish 2 of them, contrast, and the one-color relationship.

Contrast can be seen in the apples, one is definitely larger than the others, putting emphasis on it, making it the foreground, while the rest of the apples are in the background. Contrast can also be seen in the font choices, I chose to use both a serif and a sans-serif font, the serif font is more readable and used for the hand cream ingredients, while the sans-serif is less readable and more of a decorative choice.

For the analogous color scheme, I chose to use the three colors, red, orange, and yellow-orange. This gives it a warm and vibrant look compared to the original complimentary color scheme I was going to do, red and green. The analogous color scheme also embraces the apple honey scent that the hand cream has.

Conclusion

I had a lot of fun designing this poster, and I really enjoy how it turned out. The process I enjoyed the most was drawing the elements of the hand cream bottle, and because I had a real life model, it definitely made it easier. The process that took the longest was the color changing, I had to go through some variations before finalizing the colors, saving them and sending them into InDesign. One thing I would do different is to not mix pixel art with non-pixel art, while I initially liked the honey drip at the top, after not looking at the poster for a while, I realized the combined styles gives it a mismatched look. Another thing I would fix is definitely the writing on the apples, the text on top of it looks unnatural, and there is probably a better way to display them. This was my first project in Adobe InDesign and it definitely gave me some trouble, making me look up many times how to do certain actions, but it also taught me a lot.
